Wednesday, March 21, 2007 i am @ youth sg Giving this theme iam @ youth sg mean youth in singapore. Youth in Singapore is all about School's life[studies, cca, friend] Singlish First of all, i will talk about the school life that i have now... Studies: Studies is very important. Nowadays, in background of employers they loolat the educational background of theirs employees. So in youth, we must work hard as this is pretty much decide on our own furthre. One with a good education background often helps in application of our job in further. And study is also another way we gain in more knowledge. CCA: Co-cirriculum activities is a place where we learn qualities from. My cca is band. As times passes, i actually gain more leadership qualities like traning junior, and resposibility to take care of our own instrument, and even confidence throught competiton and performance, it give me a chanceto face people off stage and perform the best in such situation. Friend: Is the most important group in a youth's life. we learn how to communicate with people with different personalities and chose the right peers. Having friend is a way of sharing sersect with, helping each other when there is trouble. But in life, not everyone is your friend, you will meet someone whom you hate, cursing him/her every night. But this is a process of life, whre you will learn how to communicate with them whether you like it or not. Second, i will talk about Singlish that alot of Singaporean speak daily, including me and my classmate. Singlish is an English-based creole language native to Singapore. It is the first language of many younger Singaporeans, especially those whose parents do not share a native language or dialect, and is the second language of nearly all the rest of the country's residents. The vocabulary of Singlish consists of words originating from English, Hokkien, Cantonese, Malay, and to a lesser extent various other Indic and Sinitic languages, while Singlish syntax resembles southern varieties of Chinese. Also, elements of American and Australian slang have come through from imported television series.Singlish is closely related to Manglish of neighbouring Malaysia. An anti-Singlish editorial in the Straits Time (May 2, 2000) was yet another attack by a Singapore opinion leader, but the issue needs a less reactionary approach. Firstly, like nearly all official campaigns against language issues, there will be little to show for the money spent. Language change is driven by forces nearly always well beyond the control of governments and newspaper editors. Even Stalin failed, and governments more sensitive to public opinion risk looking foolish. Secondly, the concerns that Singlish is a danger to the international competitiveness of Singapore are wrong. Many English speakers around the world speak non-standard dialects of English as their main language, yet they are still fluent in standard English. In fact, leading researchers say that less than 15% of native-born Britons speak standard English as their everyday dialect1 See the papers linked below. 5:22 AM |
